"A VOICE IN SEARCH OF THE WIDE EXPANSION OF THE FREE WIND"

XAVIER RIBALTA was born in T´┐Żrrega (Lleida) in 1943, son of a family deeply related to the Earth and the country. These roots will be present later in his form to compose and to interpret. In Barcelona, besides to study Industrial Engineering by familiar advice, he also does Music studies in "Conservatori del Liceu" with Montserrat Kemeny.

After finishing Engineering, Xavier Ribalta dedicates himself completely to the Music, and knowing the poets and more significant writers of the moment. Many of them will later dedicate him reviews glossing his artistic qualities (Salvador Espriu, Pere IV, Joaquin Horta, Joan Colomines, Blas de Otero, Gabriel Celaya, Rafael Alberti, Guillem Viladot, Caballero Bolnald, Manuel de Pedrolo, Maria Aur´┐Żlia Capmany, Ernesto Sabato, M. V´┐Żzquez Montalb´┐Żn, Paco Rod´┐Żn, etc.)

His name is one of the first of the "Nova Can´┐Ż´┐Ż", but from his beginnings he follows an independent, personnel and "committed" own way that will take to him to auto-exile for not being able to work in his country. In 1968 the Spanish Government forbid him to sing in all the Spanish territory, prohibition that will follow effective until year 1975.

In 1965 a French man who works in the Record Industry, related to Edy Barclay discovers him when he sings in a restaurant in Barcelona. As a result of this first meeting Xavier records his first LP "Xavier canta les seves can´┐Żons". Shortly after, he knows Paco Ib´┐Ż´┐Żez in Paris; from then, they star a personal and professional relationship that took them to do concerts through Spain, Europe and Latin America presenting and singing Spanish and Catalan poetry of today and always.

In 1968 forced to an artistic exile, Xavier will start his International career. He continues his work with great success in France, where he lives for long seasons and he keeps working and playing live in Italy, Germany, Belgium, Austria, Mexico and other countries of Latin America. In this time he records several LPs. To emphasise "Xavier Ribalta a l'Olimpia" a live recording of the concert made March the 5th 1975 in the prestigious Theatre of Paris.

In 1975 XAVIER RIBALTA returns to Spain and presents his songs in "Teatre Romea" in Barcelona and in "Teatro Barcel´┐Ż" in Madrid. Those presentations along with a Tour around Spain confirmed that Xavier, through all this time of prohibitions reaffirmed and consolidated the direction and the quality of his work as interpreter and composer.

In the eighties he plays in front of the most prestigious audiences in Argentina, Uruguay, Checoslovaquia, Hungary, Bulgaria, Germany, Austria, Belgium, Switzerland, Holland, Norway, the former USSR and mainly in the United States and Canada. Xavier Ribalta also records two CDs dedicated to two contemporary Catalan poets "Xavier Ribalta canta Apel´┐Żles Mestres" and "Xavier Ribalta canta Joan Maragall".

Two great concerts confirm his recognition at International level are: the one made in the United Nations of New York on April the 11th 1985 in "Daj Hammarksj´┐Żld Auditorium", and in the same city, in the "Carnegie Hall" on February 1982.

Xavier Ribalta aside from his own compositions has musicated poets like Joaquin Horta, Juan Salvat Papasse´┐Żt, Joan Maragall, Joan Margarit, Pere Quart, Joan Colomines, Marius Torres among others and has made a decisive work in the recovery of anonymous and popular songs of Catalunya.

The work of XAVIER RIBALTA personifies the most genuine orientation of the Catalan Can´┐Ż´┐Ż. The musical wealth of his compositions, valued anywhere in the World, the rigor in the election of the musicated poets and the strength of the interpretation are their main qualities. "His deep and full voice, always searching the wide expansion of free wind " as Rafael Alberti said.

As the critic Antoni Batiste affirms, "the musical conception of Xavier Ribalta drinks of his own sources, and do not look for of the preciosism able to disguise any message, nor the unfortunate plagiarism of the tics of Anglo-Saxon Music".

His Music comes from the naturally tradition of the Popular Music of our country through dialogues of primary instruments. We will never thank enough to Xavier Ribalta the adapting to his syllabic cadence and the message he transmits.
